Tyros

Tyros is called after Apollonius Tyrita, who was worshipped in this area. It lies on the mountain slope and reaches the sea at a wonderful bay. It is one of the ancient naval states of Eastern Peloponnese, and its residents are inextricably bound to the sea and the naval profession, keeping on a long tradition.

Recent excavations revealed ancient tombs of the Mycenaean period, remnants of an ancient settlement and Cyclopean walls, the underpinning of the Castle and finally traces of ancient docks. In addition, Dersios Cavern is located at the plateau at an altitude of 680 meters. It was famous from the ancient times, and lately is widely explored by speleologists.

Tyros is a rapidly developing tourist resort for ideal vacations. The three windmills located on the top of the rock give this place a nice, islandish touch.
