Mari

The village of Mari is one of the most ancient villages of the region. Pausanias (the ancient Greek traveler and geographer) refers to it as Lakonika. It has been inhabited since the 3rd – 4th century B.C. It was once greatly revered, with its temples dedicated to Artemis and a common temple to the great gods. Possibly there was a healing center, “asklepeio”, because the rushing healing waters are abundant in the village and it has a very good climate. The ruins of an ancient acropolis lie to the south of the village. The great Mariorema, the seasonal stream, belongs to the large network of waters forming this region’s wetlands.
